The Mission of We Believe ATX is to seek transparency and accountability, promote best practices, and ensure equity in the systems that exist to serve survivors of sexual assault in Austin, Texas.

#WeBelieve is a campaign led by survivors, advocates, community members, and organizations committed to sexual assault criminal justice reform in Austin, Texas. The campaign is rooted in a set of visionary demands for what #WeBelieve are necessary outcomes for justice, truth and transparency around sexual assault.

FACTS

2 in 5 women in Texas are survivors of sexual assault, and 70% of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim, but only 9.2% of survivors report their experience to the police.

More than 13% of female sexual assault victims who choose not to report do so because they believe that the police cannot, or will not, do anything to help.

The Austin Police Department had probable cause to arrest more than 1,400 identified rape suspects between 2012 and 2017, but those suspects were not arrested. 

- ProPublica, Newsy, and the Center for Investigative Reporting 

834 incidents of rape were reported to the Austin Police Department in 2017, and 747 were reported in 2016.

The Travis County District Attorney received just 224 cases of sexual assault from July 2016 to June 2017, and during that same period, only 8 sexual assault cases resulted in a guilty plea or a conviction at trial.
